Abstract

This article analyzes the attempt by a group of workers from the Honda automobile company to form an independent union. This meant entering into direct conflict with the union that owns the collective contract, the Union of Employees and Workers in the Structure (SETEAMI), belonging to the Confederation of Workers of Mexico (CTM), which was unknown to the workers of the plant. This case takes on exceptional importance in the panorama of contemporary unionism as it is one of the few attempts to form an independent and democratic union for workers in the Jalisco region in the last two decades. The movement is situated as a continuity of others, such as the strike of the workers of the Euzkadi tire factory (2002-2004).
